Coorg

 Travel memoir

2017 gave me some of my worst life experiences. Looking back, I can see that each one of those experiences had a purpose. After all, "things don't happen to you, they happen for you." However, it was not all bad. I have specific memories of certain people and places, which hold a special place in my heart. One such place is Coorg.

It was our first excursion from school; my friends and I couldn't have been more thrilled. The excitement didn't last long, though. The hotel service at the first place (Hogenakkal) was so disappointing that we wanted the tour to end early and return home as soon as possible. The second place was exhausting. Two days felt like two weeks. At that desperate moment, Coorg came to our aid - the third and final place. It was the best destination to end the lousy trip and to refresh our despairing souls.

Coorg is known as the Scotland of India, and it is for a reason. It is wondrous in a mystical kind of way. Coorg, in my memory smelt of dried grass and blew winds that promised a better tomorrow. Perhaps, it was Shelley's West Wind greeting me, imbuing me with hope. Initially, we visited a location that I believe was a park. Afterward, we went to the Golden Temple. I was instantly captivated by this place as it was a Tibetan Monastery. I was fascinated by its beauty and found myself watching the monks for a while. After noon, we went to a bamboo forest. This place was my favorite. I think this is where I first picked up the habit of observing people. Just sitting there on a bench between those trees had a calming effect. I had time to introspect about the entire tour and felt grateful to have been there.

The shopping area felt surreal. I came across things that I had never seen in my life. I bought a small, green, jewelry box for myself and other souvenirs for friends and family.

When it was time to go, I was sad. A trip that started off as a disaster turned out to become life changing. I made new friends and created unforgettable memories. Even today, when I think of Coorg, I can see a luminous image of the bamboo trees, the park and the golden temple forming before my eyes. Coorg, to me is a place of magic, a place of mystique.

Do read The Golden Streets Of Mysore, Mysore being the second place.
